Exemptions from Submitting Data to the NIAAA Data Archive

Grant applications involving human subjects research funded by the NIAAA are expected to submit de-identified, individual-level data to the NIAAA Data Archive, as outlined in the NOT-AA-23-002.

However, applicants may seek a full or partial exemption from data sharing with the NIAAA Data Archive if there is a well-justified reason (see 2023 NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy for potential justifiable reasons for limiting sharing of data). These, and other reasons, while uncommon, may be considered by the NIAAA Exemption Committee on case-by-case basis for all or part of the data involved in your grant application.

If you feel that your study should be fully or partially exempt, please provide the following information in Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan of your grant application:

  1. A description of scientific data to be collected (Element 1 – Data type).
  2. Specification of whether a Full or Partial exemption is requested, including what data will and will not be shared with the NIAAA Data Archive. If not to be shared with the NIAAA Data Archive, describe whether the data can be shared through another repository. (Elements 1 and 4 – Data preservation, access, and timelines).
  3. Justification as to why the data will not be shared (Elements 1 and 4).

Note: though not to be included in the grant application, documentation to support the justification (e.g., a Data Use Agreement that prohibits data sharing of a given dataset; a signed letter from a Tribal Authority or Government entity prohibiting data sharing) may be requested by NIAAA staff at a later stage of the grant award process.
